Fibromyalgia / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects a person’s musculoskeletal system. It targets the muscles and the bones. It is notorious for being incurable for now. This does not bode well for those who have fibromyalgia. Relieving fibromyalgia pain remains a priority for caregivers and medical professionals looking after people diagnosed with this condition.
Primary Characteristics
The main characteristic of fibromyalgia is the kind of pain it inflicts.
- It can be dull yet incessant.
- The ache can begin in one part of the body then spread to other sections.
- It can engulf and overpower the person.
- The pain is naturally pervasive, which most people find debilitating.
Method of Detection
There is no single method to learn the cause of fibromyalgia nor diagnose it. Instead, medical experts follow a particular set of guidelines to establish the presence of this condition.
- Tender points – They apply pressure on pre-identified tender points all over the body. Their diagnosis builds on the level of pain displayed by the person. Someone suspected to have fibromyalgia must exhibit discomfort at least in 4 of 5 tender points.
- Duration – In addition to this, the pain must have started at least three months before the consultation.
- Other medical issues – Doctors also check for other conditions that might be the reason behind such widespread pain. However, the presence of medical conditions like cancer and arthritis do not eliminate fibromyalgia. It can be a concurring ailment that wreaks havoc on the body along with other illnesses.
Fibromyalgia and The Central Nervous System
Medical experts find it challenging to identify the real cause of fibromyalgia. However, it seems that this condition is directly linked to the central nervous system’s key components: the brain and the spinal cord. The brain processes signal transmitted by the nerves that pass through the spinal cord. Based on the brain’s interpretations of the delivered messages, the rest of the body acts on its commands.
In the case of fibromyalgia, the brain interprets the signals as pain-related, so various parts of the body ache whether there is cause for the pain or not. This is particularly crucial when the body is out of alignment. Typically, nerves transmit signals without any hitches. Ideally, the brain interprets them correctly so different body parts and systems can function as expected. When the body is out of its proper alignment, the communication pathway becomes impaired. It adversely affects the nerves’ messages to and from the brain.
Impact of Misalignment Issues on Fibromyalgia
Misalignment can happen as quickly as a result of improper posture or as unexpected as a vehicular accident. On top of these, age and lifestyle choices can also affect the body’s symmetry. When the body’s spinal bones and discs are no longer in their original spots, many things can happen. One is the constriction of the pathways that can impede blood flow and oxygen delivery to critical parts of the body. Another is the build-up of pressure due to the narrow channels. This can affect the muscles around the area, which leads to undue strain.
Identifying the primary cause of fibromyalgia is vital to achieving relief from the pain it brings. Ensuring that the body is fully aligned might positively influence the central nervous system’s functions, relieving fibromyalgia pain of those afflicted with this condition.
