Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder that affects one’s ability to maintain posture and balance. Doctors mostly diagnose it during early childhood, prompting parents of children with the condition to look for cerebral palsy interventions. In fact, according to CDC, around 1 to 4 out of 1000 newborn babies or kids have cerebral palsy. If you suspect that your child has this condition, it’s best to seek medical help to get an accurate diagnosis.

Signs of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy chiropractic doctors are aware that the symptoms of CP tend to differ a lot from one person to another. Some who only have the mild type may only experience signs like stiff joints and uncontrolled muscle movements. Other kids have it worst as they display symptoms such as total immobility, slurred speech, and having learning difficulties. Usually, the key signs appear even at a very early age. It’s crucial to take notice of such signals to improve the child’s prognosis.

Here are the main types of CP and their usual warning signs:

  • Spatial Cerebral Palsy – Around 80 percent of diagnosed cerebral palsy patients fall under this category. It often causes muscle stiffness on the legs, one side of the body, or all the limbs.
  • Ataxic Cerebral Palsy – This type causes difficulty in sensing motion and orientation. Patients with this type of condition struggle to control their body movements.
  • Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy – It’s a type of CP that makes it difficult to control both the upper and lower limbs’ movements. It can render a child immobile and require long-term care.
  • Mixed Cerebral Palsy – This CP type occurs when a patient gets diagnosed with more than one type of cerebral palsy.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy can be a result of abnormal brain development. Sometimes, it can also stem from brain damage at an early age. Back in the earlier days, many believed that lack of oxygen during childbirth mainly causes CP. However, recent studies show that there may be other factors that could trigger its development. Some cases might be congenital, while others may occur during the pregnancy period.

Below are the common risk factors of CP recognized by every chiropractor for cerebral palsy:

  • Premature birth
  • Low birthweight
  • Infections during the gestation period
  • Birth complications
  • Brain infection during childhood (encephalitis or meningitis)
  • Head or brain trauma
  • Having sickle cell disease

Cerebral Palsy Interventions

Currently, CP does not have a cure. Instead, doctors and therapists only rely on alleviating the symptoms and improving a patient’s ability to move around or at least control basic muscle movements. Therapies play a significant role in a patient’s journey. Some forms, including cerebral palsy chiropractic and physical therapy, can assist with relieving discomfort.
Besides going to a chiropractor for cerebral palsy, kids might also find it helpful to receive speech therapy, recreational therapy, and aqua therapy.

Undergoing therapies can help improve various aspects of a child with CP. There are plenty of options to choose from, depending on the overall condition of the patient. You must consult with a physician to pick the right course of action. This way, you can select therapies that would best assist a child in his/her needs, such as boosting mobility, function, and fitness.
