Migraine care is also necessary for children. Children can also fall victim to the pain of migraines. In fact, 5% of children under age 15 have migraines, while a third of those experience migraines before age 5. Migraines can be especially disabling for teenagers, causing them to miss out on school, music, and sports. A minimally invasive way to care for migraines that works in adults has recently been approved for children also.

The Society of Interventional Radiology’s 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting supplied information about this type of pain relief. It is called sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) block and does not involve needles of any sort. A small catheter is used in each nostril to give a dose of local anesthetic to the SPG – a nerve bundle linked to migraines disrupting the SPG, resetting the headache circuit, and eliminating the need for further medication. The effect is usually immediate and can last for several months.

Is This the Solution to Migraines?

While it sounds like a good idea, there are some things to be aware of. SPG therapy is not the first defense for migraines. A child will only be able to get it if he has been diagnosed with a severe migraine that has not responded to other medication or frontline care. It is also important to note that this does not address the underlying cause of migraines and, therefore, the migraine may continue to occur at some point down the road.

Safe, Long-Lasting Migraine Care

Upper cervical chiropractors have been helping children, as well as adults, cope with their migraines through a gentle, effective method that addresses the root cause. This is often due to a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae. The C1 – atlas – is susceptible to moving out of place if one has been in a sporting accident, vehicle accident, or simply a trip and fall, causing pressure on the brainstem and hindering blood flow to and from the brain. This is the perfect scenario for a migraine to occur. After seeking the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, most patients – young and old – report a decrease in migraine severity and some see them go away completely.
